It’s the current that drives the engine, and you want the same amount of current on your motor windings. The operating current of a motor is the average amount of current it is supposed to draw at a given torque.
For RC planes and helicopters, there is a stall present. That is the highest current that the motor should draw to apply enough torque for the plane/helicopter to operate at stall speed or 0 RPM.
To prevent the motor coils from overheating or melting, finding the optimum operating current and stall current of the motor is crucial in designing heat sinks.
- Dimensions of the motor
When selecting a motor for your RC, the motor’s physical size must be a deciding factor. Check the motor case for the motor’s size to ensure that the new engine would fit correctly. The motor’s size is usually indicated by a number that looks something like ’24-07′. The motor’s diameter is 24 inches, and its height is 07 inches.
It’s worth noting that larger motors generate more torque, and people who are new to the world of RC are more likely to buy larger motors for more power. However, most people are unaware of the downside of using larger engines.
The bigger the engine, the more weight your RC vehicle would have. Your RC will have a lot of momentum as its weight increases, and you’ll need a sturdier frame to survive accidents. You’d also need stronger suspension and braking.
Your RC’s momentum will increase as a result of this. This means you’ll need a new frame for impact safety, as well as new suspensions and brakes.
- The motor’s wattage (in watts)
A motor’s total power is measured in watts. The higher the wattage, the more powerful the engine. If you’re planning on upgrading the motor in your RC car, make sure to check the rating of the Electronic Speed Controller (ECS).
